The comedy’s second season premiered on Paramount+ and is quickly becoming a guilty pleasure for many, not just the Academy Award-nominated actor.
In the midst of the merger of BET+ and Paramount+, one show quickly rising on fans’ radars is “Diarra From Detroit,” the dark comedy mystery series starring Diarra Kilpatrick, DomiNque Perry and Morris Chestnut.
The show’s quirky comedy has already garnered the attention of one Academy Award-nominated actor, who not only fell in love with it but also wanted Kilpatrick to make her late-night television debut with him.
During his guest-hosting spot on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” earlier this summer, Colman Domingo raved about the series with Kilpatrick, telling her that it was his favorite show and that he had to “accost her” on the red carpet at the BET Awards to tell her how he felt.
“I got to be on it,” Domingo told her.
Recalling her late-night debut, Kilpatrick gushed about the moment in a conversation with PEOPLE.
“I’m just filled with gratitude because I love the show,” she said. “I think it’s an important, fun show, but for someone else to agree of his stature, it matters. So I’m really appreciative that this sweet, beautiful, elegant man, took some of his time and some of his shine to put it on a Black female-driven mystery-comedy.”
During their chat on “Kimmel,” Kilpatrick joked that she couldn’t afford Domingo, to which he countered that the money they could have used to let him be a guest star was instead used on another legend of the screen, Phylicia Rashad.
After some time away from their chat, Kilpatrick revealed that she did have a role in mind for Domingo, thanks in large part to the way he took on the role of Joe Jackson in the record-breaking box-office smash ‘Michael.’
“…[In ‘Michael]’, that was not on my bingo card that he would absolutely slay that role like that. He was so fantastic,” she gushed. “Then he can turn around and deliver the performance in ‘The Color Purple’ where he’s singing. He’s just such a talent. So that’s really lovely because we could really go in any direction with him.”
The “sexy, funny” show has already snagged rave reviews as its second season currently airs on Paramount+. Method Man was added to the cast for season 2 as one of Diarra’s rather mature exes looking to settle down and have kids. Still, his presence doesn’t detract from Diarra’s continued exploration of the Detroit underworld and all the nefarious things that exist with an all-star cast that includes Rashad, Glynn Thurman and a few guest appearances by Bill Duke, Lil Rel Howery, Bookem Woodbine and more.
The chaos makes for one of the more intriguing watches on TV, and no wonder Domingo is hooked, because word of mouth is spreading. And “Diarra From Detroit” is becoming one of Paramount+’s best pickups.
